Has anybody had experience of getting a work visa for Brazil? I´m currently on my second 90-day tourist visa, but want to stay longer. Any advice would be appreciated. What happens if you overstay your visa? I´ve heard that there´s an $8 charge for every day that you overstay. I´ve heard that this fine is capped at $100. Any of this true? Any problems returning to Brazil in the future if you overstay?

Ok, In my case it was Wine, Women & FOOD ! (But I did like salsa music as well).

By now, most people are aware that Lima is one of the culinary capitols of the world! When I first arrived in Peru (7 years ago) I was attracted more by the "Bevy of Beauties" than the food to be completely honest.
Coming from NYC, I was no stranger to fine and varied dining, But it was in Lima that my taste buds discovered "real passion"!

Lima is a coastal city of 9 million people who go to lunch at 1:30 every day, so you can imagine they have squeezed a restaurant into every "nook & cranny".

OOP's I forgot to mention; Lunch is the main meal of the day and many restaurants close by 3pm or morph into something else entirely.

Dinner for two (I know this is about retired singles, but remember the "Bevy of Beauties") in Lima's finest restaurants will run about $60.00 if you order the local wine (Tacama or Occuajae).

Most Limeno's and Ex-pats as well choose to have their lunch in restaurants and cafes that feature "Menu".

MENU is a specially priced meal that usually includes a starter, entree, and drink (called refresco). Prices vary from place to place but range from a low of $2.00 to $4.00 for a gourmet meal (slightly higher on weekends).

Wines,
Peruvian wines are comparable to Chilean and Argentinian in most respects. I find myself drinking Whiskey more as it is a cultural thing. Johnny Walker is the most popular here, but I am in a "committed relationship" with Jack Daniels.
Most imported goods are more expensive here as there is a 19% VAT.
The "Whiskey Gods" have smiled on Peru though, as I can get a 750ml bottle of JD for $17.90!

Women,
What can I say.
I remember as a kid watching a movie or TV show about some space travelers who land on a planet with nothing but beautiful, available young women.

YEAH, LIMA'S LIKE THAT!

Glad to have joined the board, and I'm just looking for some feedback here. I'm planning to take a 15 day trip coming up this winter and possibly follow it up with future ones next year. My main question is basically if Bogota is the best place for me to checkout in Colombia.

I'm 26 w/ a college degree who is basically resigned to just taking trips as to going expat for obvious reasons ($$$). I'd be down with teaching english in Colombia, but I just don't think there is any money in it.

Anyways 65 to 45 degrees F sounds nice to me. It is plenty humid in the Midwest in the summer and frigid in the winter. This makes Bogota seem ideal. I've been up Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs and been to Denver, so I don't think the altitude should be much of a problem.

Spirit Air has good rates if I'm willing to drive to Chicago. It seems I can get a private room in a B&B/hostel in the NE part of the city for $25 to $40 which sounds good to me.

My main reason for not trying the coastal cities is the humidity and the bugs (plus lack of education, jobless, etc). Cali does sound really nice, but I'm worried nobody will speak English at all. Manizales seems like not a bad idea. It would cost a $100 bucks roundtrip and another connection to make happen.

Basically, I'm looking for reasonable airfare (which you can't really find to Europe or Asia plus I prefer latinas anyway), a reasonable safe place to stay in the "rich" part of town, and nightlife/cultural opportunities closeby.

I've starting learning some basic espanol to go along with an electronic translator (I took it back in HS and forgot a lot). However, to be honest I doubt I'll ever be fluent. I'd like to be able to get around, party, and meet women with just basic spanish.

Is all this possible. Does Bogota seem like the right place?

Thanks

Hi All!

My Husband is Brazilian, from Rio De Janeiro. We have spent some time in Brazil in the time we have been together (8 years), but we have always permanently lived in Sydney. In the last year we have had a baby, so we are thinking it might be nice to spend a bit of time with the family in Rio....
I have my Bachelor in Teaching (0-5 years), so in Sydney I can teach at a preschool. I have been trying to find out a bit of information about getting a job at one of the international schools teaching the preschool, but it seems impossible to find anything out!!
So, I am just wondering if anyone knows how to find out about these job opportunities? What sort of pay and conditions I am looking at? We would stay for at least a year, so I would need a full time position. We are looking to do this in either 2011 or 2012.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Alison

This is my first post and also will be my maiden voyage to Colombia and Medellin. Flying from US via Denver-Houston-PTY-MDE. I have extensive travel experience in SA (i.e. nine times to Peru) and three weeks off so plan on spending the first week in MDE with a side trip at end to Santa Fe. I will probably spend the final week or so on isla San Andres y Providencia but have not decided on my middle week if I want to visit some of the colonial towns north of Bog such as Balchira and San Gil or go south to Manizales.

A few questions for the board: I have basically decided to stay at Global Hostel on Calle 35 in El Poblado. Nice website and reasonable price for a single private room with bath of $70,000 COP. Anyone familar with this place? I am also considering what appears to be a very nice apartment in El Poblado that is listed on AIRBnB but it's quite a bit more -- about $80 per nite.

Also, will take spanish classes and notice that Black Sheep Hostel offers classes plus it appears they have a nice bar and tv for socializing.

Any other recommendations or comments about MDE (private spanish instructors) or other COL locations I should consider would be appreciated.

PS: I plan to look into ESL opportunities in MDE or elsewhere if anyone has any thoughts on that option.

Hi to all,
We are a couple in our last 50's/early 60's and we retired about a year ago in Nicaragua. We rent a house in Managua and we love it here. We have an active group of expat friends and we feel that Nicaragua is a good place for future expats to consider. This country is "under the radar" because of a lot of misconceptions in the US. We have found it to be very welcoming and safe with warm people, good food, great health care and a low cost of living. We have a much more affluent lifestyle here than we could afford in the US. Our attitiude is that "no place is forever", but for now Nicaragua suits us and we would recommend it to others.

I use Argus in remembrance of my Doberman. I date alot, had a couple four year relationships since divorcing that dissolved due to not committing; I wasn't interested in raising children, and most women do. I'm sure I will visit South America and Asia before retiring, this site is very valuable, I hope all of you find what you are looking for in a woman and in life in general.
